My name is Melissa. I grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and attended college at the University of Southern Mississippi. I married in 1993. My husband was a career navy man, so we have lived on both the west and east coasts of the United States, as well as 2 years in Italy and 2 years in Australia. Living in these places gave me a new appreciation for art and nature.
In 2007 we settled in Virginia. I have always loved to crochet. I learned as a young girl, but put down my hook for many years. I rediscovered crochet about 15 years ago. I enjoyed making edgings on baby blankets for friends and family. It was during that time that I taught myself to read stitch patterns. One of the first items I made was a purse in a basketweave pattern. It was a joy to see the pattern come to life. I have also crocheted clothing for myself and my children.
I became interested in creating with satin cord after reading a book on making purses. Several of the purses called for “rayon corde”. I looked it up and realized that it was another name for satin cord. I liked the look of the crocheted cord, so I ordered three different colors to make a purse. The purse was very heavy using the 2mm cord that I had bought. I began to wonder what else I could crochet where heaviness would be a plus. My answer was baskets.
So I started experimenting with basket shapes and color combinations. I also decided to crochet with hemp twine as well. I liked the results and decided to share my creations with the world and opened my etsy shop on November 1, 2010. Everyone needs bowls and baskets to corral the necessities of life. Why not make them colorful and beautiful?
